Considering AI Dialogue through Soccer Tactics

Let’s reflect on AI dialogue strategies using soccer tactics as a metaphor.

When engaging with conversational AI, two main prompting approaches can be distinguished: “polite requests” and “direct instructions.”

“Polite requests” resemble a possession-based soccer strategy, carefully connecting passes, patiently building relationships, and deepening mutual understanding through prolonged interactions.

On the other hand, “direct instructions” are akin to counter-attack strategies, quickly achieving clear, concise, and straightforward responses when efficiency is paramount.

In soccer, there’s no absolute superiority between possession and counter-attacks—each has its own situational value. Similarly, in AI communication, neither method is universally better; effectiveness depends greatly on the context and individual values.

True conversational AI is about co-creation. Standard benchmarks often focus exclusively on single-turn responses, missing the deeper, more creative possibilities of ongoing dialogue.
